Sabbath Keeping Revisited

It appears to me that the arguments for Sabbath Keeping are now apparently classified in these broad areas:

1) It is argued that historical Sabbath Keeping, erroneously shifted to Sunday, and 1700 years of church teaching of it and acceptance of it, somehow give it legitimacy and weight as a proper teaching for today for practice at some level.

2) It is argued that blue laws, enacted and practiced in this country for approximately 200 years, somehow give weight to a biblical argument and constitute meat in an argumentative sense.

3) It is argued that the customs and traditions of men and language, namely the practice of Sabbaticals by University professors, is somehow persuasive in arguing for Sabbath Keeping.

Historically, the church has to it's credit, the fires of Smithfield for those who did not accept the Catholic doctrine of the mass. Infant baptism is also still widely taught. A majority of the church teaches that prophets and apostles passed away after the first century. Much of the church denies that the gifts of the spirit, particularly tongues, interpretation of tongues, and prophecy have remained and are functioning in the church. Clearly, historicity is a non argument in defense of whether anything is right or wrong in God's sight.

The enactment of blue laws, as well, is a non-argument. The crusades saw the enactment of "convert or die" laws with respect to Jews and others. In Spain, under Torquenada, the law said, "convert or be exiled". These laws, enacted with the imprimatur of church leadership, clearly do not stand in the light of God we walk in today.

Language tends to follow tradition. Tradition and law crucified Jesus of Nazareth.

I believe that it is a leap to state that the "Lord's day" of Revelation 1:10 was the Saturday Sabbath. I find it interesting that Matthew Henry, writing in 1714, said that

"The day and time in which he had this vision: it was the Lord's day, the day which Christ had separated and set apart for himself, as the eucharist is called the Lord's supper. Surely this can be no other than the Christian Sabbath, the first day of the week, to be observed in remembrance of the resurrection of Christ. Let us who call him our Lord honour him on his own day, the day which the Lord hath made and in which we ought to rejoice.."

My pastor's question remains unanswered: are you advocating Sabbath Keeping as worship, tradition or law? The Adventists believe we are in danger of hell fire if we fail to keep the Sabbath. How about you?
