Dear WPA and Others:

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting my Mormon relatives in Illinois in their home. Their daughter divorced me almost ten years ago, and it has been longer than that since I was there at their home. We attended my sister's wedding in Kansas City, and then drove all night to arrive back in Illinois at about 5 A.M. They had told me just to come in to the guest room and make myself at home, while my children, who had slept all night in the car, were ready to go full speed ahead in waking mode.

I entered that room, and saw that it was decorated beautifully, in an unusually attractive and comfortable manner. The bed was turned down. Towels and hand towels were provided for me. The shades were impenetrable to light, which would permit to sleep in the early morning, which is such a relief when you have just driven all night. The room was one of the most absolutely comforting sights that I have seen in many years. I sighed in relief, pulled the shades, and slept until 10.

When I arose, I went into the kitchen. Several of the other Mormon relatives were in town as well. One of them, the great grandmother of my children, has always thought I was the greatest. She had made homemade vegetable soup, just for me. I was treated like an absolute king. Then, I sat for an hour with my ex Father in law, discussing the children, and their progress in school and life.

I'm telling you, these Mormon people know how to be gracious hosts, and they know and love their families, their children and their grandchildren. You won't find it better anywhere. I found myself longing that their eyes could be opened to what I have seen, and that they might be saved, and have the courage to stand against the persecution and separation that comes when a Mormon comes to the real Jesus. On this trip, however, I was not permitted by the Lord to issue one more warning to them. Yet, the hidden longing persisted.

Yesterday, I took up my bible, and as I prepared to open it, the Lord spoke clearly to me. He said that He was going to speak to me from the scripture that my eyes first fell upon and as I opened my bible to a random place, my eyes fell upon Mark 12:13.

"And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth:"

As I read that, the presence of the Lord came all around me, and I knew that I'm beginning to be more like Jesus. As Laura wrote, my footsteps are finally beginning to fill the inside of His.

Look at that: to be like Jesus, we will:
1) Be true
2) Care for no man
3) Regard not the person of man
4) Teach the way of God in truth

Even our enemies are going to be forced to say these things about us, just as they said them about Jesus.

I receive many private letters. Recently, I've gotten a few who report that, just like my Mormon relatives, Bill and Marsha Burns are the most gracious of hosts, and most loving human beings that anyone remembers being hosted by. They hold their services without passing a bag for money, just as it is done in any Mormon meeting hall. No one will ever pass an offering plate in a Mormon ward or stake meeting. I have never had the pleasure of visiting at Faith Tabernacle, but I am sure that I would find it just as many have reported to me: the worship will be wonderful and exhilarating, the fellowship divine, and the hosts most gracious.

Now, don't get upset. I'm not placing Bill and Marsha Burns at the same level as Mormons in their meetings. I'm only talking about the graciousness of their hosting, the comfort of the accomodations and the similarity in refusing to pass an offering plate. That is all. I know there are major theological differences. I will, however, hold my Mormon relatives right up along side of the Burns family in the hosting department.

Where am I going with this?

Last night, I watched a video that Jim Manker gave me on Sunday. It is by another ex-Mormon, named Eric Barger. Eric opens the tape by reading 2 Corinthians 11:3. As he read, the Lord let me know that this word was for me:

"But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

Another Jesus, another Spirit, another gospel! My Mormon relatives are just as wonderful as you, and me and Bill Burns, but they preach another Jesus! They are headed for hell, and this fact tears me up. Paul says, that we might well bear with him who preaches such things: another Jesus, another Spirit, another gospel. The NIV says that "you put up with it easily enough". WHY DO WE PUT UP WITH IT?

We put up with it because the preachers who come with another Jesus, another Spirit, or another gospel are NICE GRACIOUS PEOPLE. They are likable, wonderful, loving people. They are charismatic and persuasive. They open their homes to us. We want to like them and more than that, we want them to like us. We therefore put up with another Jesus, or another Spirit, or another gospel, easily enough.

People are you getting this? If you are not going to "put up with it", you are going to have to look past all of these wonderful human factors and focus on three things:

1) What Jesus are they teaching? Is it the Jesus of the bible, in whom my forefathers believed? Is He the Lord God? Was He raised from the dead? Was He born of a virgin? Did His death pay for all of my sins? Was what He did totally sufficient? Is He the only God?

2) What Spirit are they teaching? Is it the one you have received? As Paul writes to the Galatians, "Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered so many things in vain? He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?"

3) What gospel are they preaching? We are told by Jude that we will have to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints. This means it won't be easy and you will have to fight to hold on to the correct gospel. Paul warned Galatia that even angels would come to persuade men that they should accept another gospel. What gospel did we receive: that Jesus Christ, and faith in him alone, saves and justifies a man. This faith alone imputes righteousness to man before God: NOTHING ELSE. We are not saved or justified by works, therefore no man can boast. This same Paul exhorted men everywhere to live holy lives IN CHRIST JESUS. Anything that departs from or adds to or takes away from these basic truths is to be contended against earnestly. Paul used the strongest language possible: he said: "let him be accursed". And, Paul said it twice. It is a serious thing, as a Christian, to curse someone, and yet that is exactly what Paul did to those who will bring another gospel.

People, are you getting this. Mormons are wonderful people, but they carry death in their gospel and they bring to you a Jesus who is a different guy who cannot save. Others are wonderful as well, but we cannot let our focus be on that alone. We have to focus on what they preach and discern what spirit they are of. If you begin to be a respecter of persons, or regard men, or fail to hold tightly to truth, or cease to be upset when teachers depart from the truth, you are going to be led astray.

Be on your guard! Remember what Jesus told us about the scribes and Pharisees. "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which INDEED APPEAR BEAUTIFUL OUTWARD, but within ye are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so, ye also OUTWARDLY APPEAR RIGHTEOUS UNTO MEN, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity."
